Dr. Nick Gent is a highly experienced Public Health Doctor who is joining the Ministry of Health & Wellness as Chief Medical Officer in October 2022. He leaves the post of Senior Medical Adviser / Consultant in Public Health with the UK Health Security Agency where he has worked principally in the field of Chemical, Biological & Radiological (CBRN) Threats, and the management of major incidents and severe public health threats for the last 20 years.
Prior to this he worked in district public health services as a Director of Public Health and as an executive member of a number of Health Service Authorities in the UK National Health Service with responsibility for public health, health protection, and developing and commissioning a wide range of health care services.
Dr. Gent also has extensive experience of working for the European Union, World Health Organization, the World Bank and the UK Department for International Development in areas including advice on legislation concerning human rights, public health, health services, and health regulations; preparedness and response to major incidents, disaster relief coordination, restoring and developing public health systems, and developing health care services.
He is a member of the World Health Organization roster of experts as an adviser on public health in radiation emergencies, public health security including bioweapons, and risk assessment. Dr. Gent is currently the chair of the UK Faculty of Public Health’s Health Protection Committee and a member of the Faculty’s Policy Committee. He is a recipient of the UK Faculty of Public Health’s Alwyn Smith Prize for his outstanding contribution to the health of the public (2015); and he was awarded the West Africa Medal for his services in Sierra Leone during the 2014-15 Ebola outbreak.
Dr. Gent was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to health protection in 2018.
